Britpave, the British Cementitious Paving Association, is an independent body established to develop and forward concrete and cementitious solutions for infrastructure.
Please note, Britpave Trade Association has no commercial interest in or trading association with Britpave concrete step barrier. For contact details see: www.bbsbarriers.com
It is active in the development of solutions and best practice for roads, rail, airfields, guided bus, drainage channels, soil stabilisation and recycling. As such, the Association is the focal point for the infrastructure industry.
The broad membership of Britpave encourages the exchange of pan-industry expertise and experience. Members include contractors, consulting engineers and designers, specialist equipment and material suppliers, academics and clients both in the UK and internationally.
The Association works closely with national and European standards and regulatory bodies, clients and associated industry organisations. It provides a single industry voice that facilitates representation to government, develops best practice and technical guidance and champions concrete solutions that are cost efficient, sustainable, low maintenance and long-lasting.

The site had become contaminated due to part of it being used as an oil refinery and waste treatment facility. The client, Viola, wished to redevelop part of the site for a waste processing plant and car parking whilst also addressing the perceived environmental risks associated with the contamination.
The majority of the contamination was present in shallow soils and comprised a range of compounds including acid tars. The shallow soil itself predominately comprised granular oil refinery waste of ash, concrete and crushed brick. Contamination was also present in the natural deposits underlying the top soil resulting in the potential to impact groundwater present at depths between 2.5 and 5.4 below ground level.
The principal objective of the works was to provide a geotechnically suitable stabilised platform with a bearing capacity of 150kN/m2. This included addressing key areas of contamination, provision of a low permeability cap across the rest of the site and chemical oxidation to the deeper groundwater borne to mitigate risk to the nearby Manchester Ship Canal.
A full site report was prepared by CE Geochem which detailed the appropriate mix designs. The site was split into 8 areas with each requiring a different depth and/or type of soil stabilisation dependent on the contamination and required remediation mix. Combined Soil Stabilisation, overseen by the main remediation contractor Geo2, removed, crushed and screened the existing hard shoulder areas to Type 1 DoT specification for re-use on site as a capping layer above the stabilised soils. With the hard shoulders areas removed Combined Soil Stabilisation undertook the necessary soil stabilisation and compliance testing.
The project has successfully addressed the contamination issues of the brownfield site by immobilising potential contaminants with no removal of contaminated material from site to landfill and with re-use of site materials reducing the need for imported material to provide the geotechnical platform.
